It's for the Young Gay Men

Young Filipino Gay Men are proud of their sexuality

Most of my dearest friends in their 40's do not agree with marriage equality. My beloved friends grew up in the 70's and 80's and the gay life then was really different. Think of Dolphy's Pacifica Falayfay or Roderick Paulate's Petrang Kabayo. And that will give you an idea on how society viewed the Filipino gay man. That was the world back then. And I certainly understood why someone from that era would never dare to demand for equal treatment.

Roderick Paulate's gay movie characters
represented how society accepted
the gay men in the 80's

Fast forward to 2000. Gay Men are connected to the internet. More and more developed countries are accepting Gay Marriage. Young gay men now have a bigger sense of freedom. They are now open to be in a relationship with each other rather than settle with a "commercial" boy toy. They join pride marches. Gay Lovers dare to hold each other's hands at the mall (and they even dare to kill each other for love).

With these accelerating changes here's the inevitable truth. The future of equality belongs to these young men who think they deserve equal treatment. And not to those who have used up half of their lifetime accepting homophobia as a rule of life.

my dear lexi,

i'm in my 40's (although it definitely doesn't show) and i believe in equal treatment but i don't believe in demanding for it. para sa akin, equality, just like respect should be earned.

and i don't think vice ganda's petrang kabayo is a more progressive version of roderick paulate's. zombading's remington as well as his father are still portrayed as limpwristed gay men in the tradition of pacifica falayfay.
so how are the movies we watched growing up different from the ones being shown in this generation? parang pareho lang, diba? i don't think these movies could be indicators of how gay filipinos think then and now.

baka lang mas empowered ang mga bading ngayon to air their angas and prinsipyo due to the advent of social networks and the like.

just my two cents...
