Christine Jorgensen was famous in the US for having been the first widely known individual to have the sex reassignment surgery in this case from male to female.
In 1953, she was even named by New York city as Woman of the Year. Jorgensen's traditional values explain why this prim and proper young lady was so well received by a conservative America.
Because Jorgensen lent her face to the cause of transexuality, thousands of cases came out of woodwork. Until then, it was believed that there were only a few "deviants" to be dealth with.
