Sex Workers

(Macho Dancer, the landmark Filipino film on commercial sex workers)

Hi Lex,

Here I go again. My apologies to you and to your readers if I will appear as a simpleton, naive gay guy but really, I do want to raise a couple of questions again.

First, for people in the film industry, producers, directors, writers, editors, etc. How come, as much as 95% (this estimate is mine and has no scientific basis) of all gay films produced or done in the Philippines revolved around the lives of commercial sex workers (macho dancers, callboys, masahistas, and now group dancers) and their patrons?

Alex

--------------

Hi Alex,

You have a very nice name!

I agree with you. Male Sex workers and their trade is quite tiring as a subject matter for film.

Most filmmakers would choose them as subject matters because it is a good excuse for the censors to get away with some flesh. As the "milieu" of the film requires sexual images.

Ace & His Armpit

For armpit lovers, here's an erotic photo of Ace Ricafort, one of the new actors to be launched in Joselito Altarejos' "Ang Laro ng Buhay ni Juan". Here's an article from Edgar Cruz of Stir.ph on the film:

Recall the handsome and personable young hunk J.D. that Thelma falls for at first sight in Ridley Scott’s 1991 road movie “Thelma and Louise?” He turned out to be the sexiest man alive and the great actor Brad Pitt! Mark this hunk, Ace Ricafort! He will have the Brad Pitt effect on you when you watch Joselito Altarejos’ “Ang Laro ng Buhay ni Juan” showing exclusively in Robinsons Cinemas (Galleria and Manila) on Oct. 21.

“Ang Laro ng Buhay ni Juan” explores two hours in the life of Juan Reyes, known to others as Erwin. Juan is a 25 year old Masbate native who just found his way to Manila three years ago. Erwin has tried his hand at many odd jobs and now works as a live-sex performer at an underground gay bar but has decided to leave Manila for good.

On the day of his departure, he will take us with him as he makes life decisions—big and small. The most important one of all is leaving the impoverished place which he called home for a year, capping it with his emotional goodbyes with his lover, Noel. And, how a raid by the authorities marred his last performance in an underground bar called Inner Sanctum which changed his resolve.

The film marks the beginning of filmmaker Joselito Altarejos’ foray in producing his own films under BEYONDtheBOX. It features Ray An Dulay as Juan, Nico Antonio as Noel (Juan’s lover) and the daring newcomer Ace Ricafort as one of the live show performers called Tupada Boys together with able actors like 2008 Cinemanila’s Asian Best Actress Angeli Bayani, Perry Escano and Richard Quan.

Michael & Madonna

In the book, "The Michael Jackson Tapes", Rabbi Shmuley Boteach based on a thirty hour interview with the deceased pop superstar, Jackson reveals an interesting anecdote between him and Madonna.

Jackson admits, he was interested in women sexually but is very shy. He tells Boteach he had never asked a woman out on a date, although he acknowledged having sexually charged phone conversations with Madonna.

In recounting one conversation, he said: "Madonna laid down the law to me before we went out," saying, "'I am not going to Disneyland, okay? That's out.'"

Jackson said Madonna was jealous of him because his female fans screamed and swooned while her male fans were less demonstrative. He recalled her crying in admiration at one of his concerts.

When contacted Friday, Madonna's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, said, "Madonna has very fond feelings for Michael Jackson, and I don't think anything in the book is going to change that." - AP

Stranded

As the storm Ondoy hit Metro Manila, I was stranded at the North Luzon Express Way for about 11 hours! Car engines were turned off. And we were all at a standstill. The scene was reminiscent of a disaster film. Children were crying. Several people have begun to walk the endless kilometers of the highway with plastic bags covering their bags. Radio news were blasting everywhere naming people who need to be rescued.

I'm still luckier. Many people died. Many more people have lost their homes.

Donations are needed for victims of the tragedy.

A Positive Step

Scientists and government leaders have already started mapping out how to try to improve the world's first successful AIDS vaccine, which protected one in three people from getting HIV in a large study in Thailand.

That's not good enough for immediate use, researchers say. Yet it is a watershed event in the 26 years since the AIDS virus was discovered. Recent setbacks led many scientists to think a successful vaccine would never be possible.

The World Health Organization and the U.N. agency UNAIDS said the results "instilled new hope" in the field, even though it likely will be years before a vaccine might be widely available.

Uncut Bayaw?

Hi Lex,

I was so excited to watch Bayaw. So last wednesday, after work, i run to galeria to watch it.

Although i haven't seen the uncut version? i think there was a major editing done. Do you think i will still have the chance to watch the uncut version? or do you know somebody who is selling an uncut version?

Thanks!

tamodko24

----------------------

Hi tamodko24,

The director, Monti Parungao and its producer Danio Cao (of Climax magazine) certainly have the uncut version of Bayaw. But it will be foolish for them to entrust me a copy of one knowing that video pirates would certainly pay a good amount for that copy.

Sorry. We are all left with a "clean" Bayaw being shown in cinemas.

Then, I knew I wasn't dreaming.

Bayaw This Week

After getting the X rating from the Censors (MTRCB), Bayaw starring Paolo Rivero and Janvier Daly will now be shown today at the following cinemas: Robinsons Galleria, Ruben, Remar, Gotesco Grand, Gotesco Ortigas, Isetann and New Cinema Cebu.

I hope they didn't remove what for me is the highlight of the film - the shower scene of Janvier Daly where he quickly reveals his proud manhood.

About Juan

(Filmmaker Joselito Altarejos (in blue shirt) giving instructions to his actors .)

From the director of "Ang Lihim ni Antonio" and "Ang Lalake Sa Parola", Joselito Altarejos comes a new film, "Ang Laro ng Buhay ni Juan".

The film explores two hours in the life of Juan Reyes, known to others as Erwin.

The film shows how "ordinary Juan" distracts himself from the nagging problems of survival in order to continue playing the game called life.

ANG LARO NG BUHAY NI JUAN is the first film produced by BEYONDtheBOX.

One Man for Life?

Can you make love only to one man for the rest of your life? (read: suck the same cock, fuck the same anal opening)? Or is monogamy really impossible?

Here are two different sides from some of the brightest readers of this blog, David and "Line of Flight"

DAVID:

"impossible" was too strong a word. however, once the romance period has worn thin, monogamy is often a struggle. keeping in mind that boys will be boys, i do think that once a relationship is firmly established, boundaries should be set and agree upon.

LINE OF FLIGHT:

I don't believe that grown men are boys, but the mindset that sees them/us as such is what perpetuates a puerile (webster: juvenile/ childish) understanding of life. it is understanding life in this way that makes it difficult for some to fully commit to anything. i agree children have a hard time committing fully to something. but that is what distinguishes children from adults. America and Americanized cultures are very puerile.

I think infidelity that comes from a puerile outlook is also consistent a lack of clear boundaries and difficulties with being honest. However, by just trying to conform behavior without addressing the underlying outlook, will inevitably invite the original evil to return again and again.

Survive A Breakup

Having undergone a recent breakup with my partner, allow me to share some personal tips on How to Survive a Breakup Without Breaking Down:

1. Get busier. Get yourself loaded with more work and appointments. Don't give yourself time to mourn.

2. When you feel that sudden attack of sadness, say you hear your partner's favorite song, create a deep and forceful exhalation -- pump the diaphragm downwards, make a loud thumping sound and the emotional attack will suddenly subside.

3. Instead of focusing on "why" your partner has done the unthinkable. Accept that your partner is imperfect, and just like everyone else deserves forgiveness from his mistakes.

4. Think. Think. Think. When the mind begins to be too emotional, activate the rational brain by analyzing events that happened. In this way, you can avoid the trap of "Life-is-unfair-sequence-of-thoughts"

Between Two Men

Let me share a priceless piece of wisdom from Lexuality reader, David:

my dear lex,

as hard as it may be, you must forgive your (ex) friend. only when you forgive, can you move on. forgiving doesn't mean forgetting or allowing that person back in to your life. it means closure, even if it isn't the closure that we wanted. to be honest, monogamy is impossible between 2 men when engaged in a long term relationship. it is just not the nature of the beast. however, honesty between 2 men is possible. without it a couple is doomed. stay busy and turn this negative in to a positive.

much good luck!

David

Thank you David,

Such wisdom is much needed right this moment.

Goodbye, Emon

Goodbye, Emon.

I do not want to ask you why you have cheated on me. I know I am imperfect. I know my love may be crude.

But when I found out the truth that you have been with Ace for the past month, all I wanted was to forgive you because like me you are imperfect. Like me, you're love is crude.

I let no anger reside within me. I choose not to suffer just because you choose to betray me.

I am trying very hard to forgive you but I had to let you go. Not because I want to hurt you, but because I need to get back the respect I have for myself.

Live a good life ahead of you. I plan to keep some happy memories within me after all, I have faithfully loved you.

Bad Experience with a Masseur

Contracting a masseur who promises an "extra service" always poses a risk for us, gay men. Here's an email I got from sideline88@yahoo.com. I am posting it as it was sent to me:

It was afternoon of Sept. 03, 2009 when I met Marlon at Vista Hotel for this was the agreed place that served as our rendezvous. Prior to meeting, I found this guy at Pinoy Masseurs for Hire website and with all honesty, I found him so attractive kaya kaagad ko siyang tinawagan sa kanyang celphone. During our phone conversation, I asked him magkano and icha-charge nya sa kin. Sabi nya “1,000 pesos lahat-lahat na yun” . I asked him, “ano ibig sabihin mo lahat-lahat”? Sabi nya, “massage kasama na ang EXTRA SERVICE”. Tanong ko sigurado ka? Oo sabi nya. Sabi ko, “sige deal for P1,000, Tapos nagkasundo kaming magkita sa Isetann-Recto and then we checked in sa Vista Hotel nga. At first okay siyang kausap, magalang at mabait. I asked him bakit wala kang dalang mga gamit sa massage unlike Tim (another masseur na nakuha ko na several times before for only 1,500 with full and extra service) lagi siyang may dalang kit o bag na full of lotion at iba pang gamit nya sa pagmamasahe. Sabi nya sa kin ang 1,000 is for massage only! Sandali lang masahe (ni hindi tumagal ng 5 minutes) worth 1,000 pesos na agad tapos additional 1,500 for ES! Wow grabe itong taong to ah! So I picked up my pants and shirts and dressed up at umalis na pero pinipigilan nya ako sabi nya 2,000 pesos na lang daw lahat. Sabi ko wala na kong pera (pero ang totoo meron akong dalang 5,000 pesos cash). But before I left the hotel, I paid him 1,000 para sa 5 minutes na walang kakwenta-kwentang masahe kasi yun ang napag-usapan naming presyo. Kaya ko siyang bayaran ng 2,500 pero the point is, it’s not agreed price beforehand. Naisip ko kasi na masyado syang aabuso kapag pinagbigyan ko sya sa hinihingi nyang presyo! Beware of him, baka gawin din nya sa inyo ang ginawa nya sa akin. Sana huwag naman…sana ako na lang ang HULING BIKTIMA NYA!

The Hunky Killer

During the late 90's, I had a huge crush on one of FBI's most wanted serial killer, Andrew Cunanan, that good looking Filipino-American who was accused of killing fashion icon, Gianni Versace among others.

I just finished reading his story at trutv.com, and learned that at some point in his life, he went to the Philippines to visit his father. And to be able to raise funds to get back to the US, he prostituted himself along the red light districts in the country.

Here's a revealing porn picture of Andrew Cunanan and a photo of his death after killing himself when he was cornered by the police.

Gay Genius

Alan Turing is considered by many as the "father of modern computing" and he is well remembered for breaking a German code from WWII, which had a profound influence on the outcome of the war. In the 1950's, he was imprisoned for being a homosexual, which was then illegal under the British laws.

But now, the British government has apologized for what they have done to one of the greatest homosexuals who ever lived in this planet. Here's the statement from British prime minister Gordon Brown:

"...thanks to a coalition of computer scientists, historians and LGBT activists, we have this year a chance to mark and celebrate another contribution to Britain’s fight against the darkness of dictatorship; that of code-breaker Alan Turing.

Turing was a quite brilliant mathematician, most famous for his work on breaking the German Enigma codes. It is no exaggeration to say that, without his outstanding contribution, the history of World War Two could well have been very different. He truly was one of those individuals we can point to whose unique contribution helped to turn the tide of war. The debt of gratitude he is owed makes it all the more horrifying, therefore, that he was treated so inhumanely. In 1952, he was convicted of ‘gross indecency’ - in effect, tried for being gay. His sentence - and he was faced with the miserable choice of this or prison - was chemical castration by a series of injections of female hormones. He took his own life just two years later.

Thousands of people have come together to demand justice for Alan Turing and recognition of the appalling way he was treated. While Turing was dealt with under the law of the time and we can’t put the clock back, his treatment was of course utterly unfair and I am pleased to have the chance to say how deeply sorry I and we all are for what happened to him. Alan and the many thousands of other gay men who were convicted as he was convicted under homophobic laws were treated terribly. Over the years millions more lived in fear of conviction.

I am proud that those days are gone and that in the last 12 years this government has done so much to make life fairer and more equal for our LGBT community. This recognition of Alan’s status as one of Britain’s most famous victims of homophobia is another step towards equality and long overdue.

But even more than that, Alan deserves recognition for his contribution to humankind. For those of us born after 1945, into a Europe which is united, democratic and at peace, it is hard to imagine that our continent was once the theatre of mankind’s darkest hour. It is difficult to believe that in living memory, people could become so consumed by hate - by anti-Semitism, by homophobia, by xenophobia and other murderous prejudices - that the gas chambers and crematoria became a piece of the European landscape as surely as the galleries and universities and concert halls which had marked out the European civilisation for hundreds of years. It is thanks to men and women who were totally committed to fighting fascism, people like Alan Turing, that the horrors of the Holocaust and of total war are part of Europe’s history and not Europe’s present.

So on behalf of the British government, and all those who live freely thanks to Alan’s work I am very proud to say: we’re sorry, you deserved so much better."

Bruno

Just saw Bruno, the film creation of comic genius Sacha Baron Cohen. Bruno is a flamboyant Austrian TV reporter who goes to Hollywood in search for fame. In this film shot in a documentary, Cohen sets himself up in different situations with clueless strangers and finds out how they will react against his blatant show of sexual outlandishness.

To some gay activists, Bruno is a step backward to how society will accept the gay men. To some including me, Bruno is an expose on the intolerance of American society on the queerness of gay men.

Whichever side you're on, you'll most likely have a big laugh on this film.

Man's Fluid

International boxer Juan Manuel Marquez admits to drink his own urine to keep himself healthy. For him, urine expels necessary vitamins from our body and must be taken again. Having heard this news, I felt an immediate gut reaction from my body disgusted at the taste of my own urine.

But then I realized, I do swallow the cum of other men, why should my body feel a quick aversion to this act of "vitamin intake"?
Perhaps, someone should tell this gorgeous boxer, that it's not only a man's urine that is delectable and tasty. He should try that other fluid that comes from the penis. I'm sure he'd feel a boost of energy as well. (just kidding)

Hunky Victor Aliwalas Visits Lexuality

Last Tuesday, I was told that a TV crew will be visiting my yoga class to feature it for a show. So, when I arrived at Gold's gym Glorietta, I was surprised that the SOP Hunk of the Year, Victor Aliwalas was there waiting to interview me for his new TV show.

Victor was manly and charming. We talked about yoga and his fitness routine and he joined my class as well.

Seeing gorgeous men attend my yoga class really takes the physical exhaustion out of my work.

Love for Money

Society criticizes many gay men whose relationship with other men are grounded on financial support. But of course, such setup was not invented by the gay men.

Take for example this controversial wife beating case of former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson. According to reports from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the wife, Che Tiongson, has been sending love letters attached with liquidations of financial expenses.

Here's the report from the Inquirer:

Tiongson’s letters, copies of which were provided by Singson’s staff to the Inquirer and to other media, oozed with sweetness and were punctuated with smiley faces and “mmmuahs.”

It contained a breakdown of her expenses which she had asked Singson to pay, along with a promise to tighten her belt in the future.

Singson said it was not true, as Tiongson had claimed, that he wanted her to be financially dependent on him.

“She wasted millions already. I gave her money to put up a restaurant, a pawnshop, a spa—but they all closed down because she was wasteful with money,” he said in Filipino.

Relationships are grounded on economic needs whether you're straight or your gay. But as blogger "line of flight" once told me, love is questionnable when power is in the center of a relationship.

Stripped Naked

Here's the photo of Richard Catral, the boyfriend of Che Tiongson, the battered wife of former Ilocos governor Chavit Singson. According to reports, he was forced to strip naked by the body guards of the government official.

With a good looking victim like this, wouldn't you just love to be one of Chavit's guards? Just Kidding.

On Big Dicks and Small Dicks

In the recent controversy of former Ilocos gov, Chavit Singson, he was accused of physical violence against his common law wife. According to him, he caught his wife making love with her boy friend and in his interviews, he reiterates how small the penis of his rival is.

In his interviews, notice how Chavit reasserts his bruised masculinity by repetitively proclaiming how small the penis of his lover's wife is.

Apparently, for men, sizes really do matter.

This reminds me of a recent problem we encountered with the production of Joselito Altarejos' "Ang Sayaw ni Juan" where the first batch of actors had a problem disrobing in front of their fellow actors simply because they were ashamed of their sizes. (I will not name these actors! Don't force me!). So, they were all replaced after the workshop.

I'm just happy to reflect that personally, I never had problems with sizes. As long as it ejaculates, I shouldn't have any problem with it.

TRAILER: In My Life

Here's the trailer of Star Cinema's "In My Life" staring Vilma Santos, Luis Manzano and John Lloyd Cruz. This film deserves the full support of the Filipino gay community for presenting a realistic image of our gender.

Suspect Wanted

Allow me to share an important announcement. My yoga client Nikka Bohinc and her partner, film critic Alexis Tioseco were killed inside their house in Quezon city. Robbery was the motive according to authorities.

Here's the photo of the maid suspect who assisted the killers. If anyone of you knows this lady please inform the authorities and let us help bring justice for the death of Nikka and Alexis.

Gay Indies Influence John Lloyd's Movie

Stir.ph writes about Vilma Santos' and John Lloyd Cruz's new film "All My Life", which is Star Cinema's offer on the "New Wave of Philippine Gay Cinema" which, according to this entertainment website is influenced by the independent scene headed by Joselito Altarejos:

"Taking from indie films’ new wave gay cinema with Joselito Altarejos as genre leader, Star Cinema released it’s first gay-themed movie In My Life on September 16. Based on the script of Senedy Que and Raymond Lee, Olivia Lamasan directs In My Life which deals with gay issues and how it affects a mother.

The Tornino Gay and Lesbian Film Festival coined the term “new wave gay cinema” for the new portrayals of gay characters and tackle gay issues upfront. Standard gay cinema deals with gay issues but they are mainly for viewing by gays. But in the case of Joselito and, for that matter, Olivia, they tackle the gay theme within the framework of the larger social perspective, the gay-themed film treated as just a film.

Besides this new treatment, the fact that Luis is Vilma’s real-life son gives it greater realism. True, the Vilma specials were so-so raters but that was largely because of the late airing time. Their ratings don’t reflect the movie’s box-office potential at all. Vilma’s character is entirely new. She will bring uncommon depth that will pass by mouth around the metro.

“In My Life” will be watched not only by gays but by all genders, by families as it is a family movie. It tackles a rarely discussed theme, gay death and how the family copes. Let’s not forget it was shot in New York and Flips are lovers for virtual trips to foreign lands. Let’s not forget, John Lloyd is the current Box-office King and he’s largely unseen on television now except for his TVCs.

Warpies and warties must not underestimate the Flips’ ability to determine a good film. With a casting coup, a terrific story, a foreign location, superb direction and excellent marketing, “All My Life’s” bound to be a movie Flips will be proud to watch. Its only problem is to get it to screen in SM Cinemas. If it does not, moviegoers will have to try a little harder by going to alternative cinemas."

On Sex Scenes and Censorship

Here’s an interesting question on sex scenes and censorhip posted by one of our readers, Alex.

**********************

Hi Lex,

I know this is a stupid question in a sense that we all know the answer. Just the same, I want to raise the question to you since you are directly involved in film making.

Lex, why do directors or movie writers such as yourself continue to make films where there are scenes that you know well enough will not pass the MTRCB's nod of approval?

Here you are again, mentioning to your readers that there is yet (again) another pink film being done complete with all the pageantry of being able to see deliciously hunky men in all their naked glory only to be disappointed because the scenes had been deleted by the censors board.

As I have said, we all know the answers already. And believe me, I do understand since I myself am a pure bred corporate guy in charge of business development. So I know what promotions really is all about and what it can do so the product/service will make money for the owners, or in this case, for the producers.

However, in your case, since we also know that you are honestly advocating for the rights of gay men in general, and pink films in particular, I would still like to believe that you continue to write and help gay film makers because it is the right thing to do despite what seems to be the obvious, albeit, the subtleness of approach.

Once more, thank you for the space.

Best regards,

Alex

*************************************

Blogger, “Line of Flight” has an answer:

i can't speak for lex, but consider the broader question. how many times does one see gay sex scenes before one gets desensitized to it. a little more approved in every movie is a little more the next one can build upon. resistance is not futile.

“Line of flight”

*************************************

Here’s my reply:

Hi Alex,

The implementation of the MTRCB rules are dependent on the board of reviewers assigned to a particular film. Sometimes, they are lenient. Sometimes they’re not. So it is always advisable for a filmmaker to do a “graphic” scene and shoot a “safe scene”. If the “graphic” scene gets the ire of the reviewers, then we simply change it with a “safer scene”.

Thanks,

Lex
