Reaction on Blow Job Scene

Here's a reaction from Alex, one our readers on that controversial "Blow Job" Scene in "Sagwan":

Hi Lex,

I have not seen the movie, the video (if ever there is already one), but I have also read the comments made by other blog readers.

I am no prude, I like to see sex scenes in movies. So having said that already, I hope nobody tags me as a hypocrite, as is the usual accusation hurled by others to people who gives out comments pertaining to sense and sensibilities.

I think what had made some people react indignantly to the scene in sagwan is that it was the director of the film who was seen doing it on the actor who played a character in the movie.

Now, whether the actor who was the recipient of the blowjob had the scene performed on him by his director willingly or not, does not matter anymore.

What it is is plain and simple. It left a bad taste in the mouth (though not necessarily the same goes for the good director and yes, pun intended for good reasons or not) to the moviegoers. And that included gays who lined up at UP for the uncut movie premiere showing of the movie, who by the way, do expected to see flesh and perhaps a bit more from the guys in the movie itself.

But to see the director doing it to the actor of the film? Perhaps if the scene involving the director wasn't a blowjob scene (it doesn't matter if the scene itself was not real and was just all camera angles, etc.), then I am sure that there would have been no violent reactions from the readers and viewers alike. Oh perhaps, there would still be comments on how cheaply made the movie was, too much flesh, irrelevant scenes, etc. But none of the kind that centers on the controversial blowjob scene by no less than the movie director done on one of the actors of the film.

And yes, Lex, the above comments are mine. I do not speak for the rest of the gay guys out there who could be for or against the current situation at the UP theatre and MTRCB stepping in.

ALEX

Hi Alex,

This is interesting. Now, I realize that this controversial scene is not merely a scene that belongs to a narrative.

It has become an illustration of power among filmmakers and actors as well as among gay men and straight men.

Thanks for this perspective.

Lex,

I'm sorry but I think there is a very unconscious very anti-sex attitude that pervades this discussion (or part of it). If the director was actually sleeping with the actor in a play-to-work scheme and/or was actually have sex on screen and the actor was just doing it for work, that would clearly be exploiting a power differential in the master/servant, employer/employee relationship.

But that is not what occurred here (from what I've read). The people complaining clearly have unconscious shame about sex and they are amplifying this issue because under the circumstances above, there would be an ethical problem related to working conditions -- just as a foreman requiring day laborers to have sex with him in order to continue employment would be a form of rape.

Here, however, is just two actors in a scene faking a blow job, one of the actors happens to be the director. Nothing yet I have read that evinces exploitation. All I have seen is that unconscious shame about sex cropping up through indignation toward working conditions.

the movie was obviously made to exploit budding actors like ryan dungo who are willing to do anything makapasok lang sa magulong mundo ng showbusiness..

napakaraming babad na long frontal shots ng mga utog na utog na burat ng mga lalaki.. tsupaan lamasan at marami pang iba!!

one very disturbing scene is that of the director(parungao) sucking the cocks of the actors with soooo much gusto!!

na para bang ipinangangalandakan talaga ni parungao sa buong mundo ang kapangyarihan na meron siya sa mga talents..

kesehodang me consent pah nung actor, sana in private nalang ung mga ganoong eksena.. or iba na lang ang gumawa.. in bad taste talaga!!

nabasa ko, sabi ni parungao, NAPILITAN LANG DAW SIYA na gawin ung EKSENA kasi WALANG BUDGET at WALANG IBANG GAGAWA!! ha?? sinong niloloko niya?

lol nakakaloka!!

Thank you lex.

As I have said in my earlier post, I do understand that there will always be two sides of a coin in every issue or matter raised. Ditto with this discussion.

I will no longer try to expound myself with what I wanted to relay by appending my thoughts to what I already earlier said. I just want to say this again: to see the director of the film itself portraying the role of an actor too in the same movie is not bad by itself. We've seen that in countless movies, both local and foreign. What is bothersome to a few (with emphasis on the "few", meaning, I am willing to accept that it as a mere minority) is that the scene in contention happens to be a blowjob scene. Again, it doesn't matter if it was a fake blowjob scene. It just doesn't register well in terms of one's sense and sensibilities.

Lex, if I throw to you a hypothetical question, will you answer it in as honest a manner as you can? Supposing, in one of your films, you've decided to also be one of the actors, would you have consented to perform a fellatio to one of the hunks in the film, no matter how deliciously inviting the hunk was?

I know my question is too leading. If we were in a court hearing, your lawyer could have objected to such a question asked to the witness. But I am sure, professional as you are as well as your readers too, I am confident that you all got my point clearly.

Thank you for allowing me to occupy this space in your blog.

i think the only difference between the BJ scene and any other foreign or domestic director-as-actor scene Alex is making is primarily a sex one which makes the comments unveiled anti-sex. My only point is on the anti-sex aspect of the discussion. If we are going to talk about ethics, we should make sure our discussion isn't secretly haunted by the programming of CBCP.

wheter on cam or off cam, yung ginagawa ng mga ganyang directors ay exploitation talaga. i know joel lamangan is known for exploiting aspiring actors/wannabees. sila ni manny valera ang tandem sa mga kalaswaan. mell navarro can attest to all these. ito ang dahilan kaya tumiwalag si mell kay manny valera. mel used to be manny valera's assistant. pumayag si mell magtrabaho kay manny para maipasok ni mell ang mga "anak anakan" nya sa mga pelikula pero later on, hindi na ma-take ni mell ang kababuyan ni manny at joel lamangan dahil gusto pa nila unahan si mell mahada ang mga kalalakihan. siempre ang lola mell hindi na makatiis kaya nag babu na. ang nakakatawa lang sa showbiz, ang isang joel lamangan tinitingala despite his kababuyan. in the movie "walang kawala", binaboy ni manny at joel ang lahat ng new actors dun. kaya hindi umaasenso ang philippine movie industry ay dahil sa ganitong mentality. imagine, parang pinaparangalan pa nila ang isang kriminal.

Thank you sir for your comment.

I just want to say that my observations and comments were actually not anti-sex, whether it seems inherent or observational. And even if it were on a discussion of being anti-sex, I hope somebody can correct me on this one: I would like to believe that not even George Duroy can be seen appearing on film where he was an actual actor to his numerous (Belami) porn films, whether he was the recipient or the giver of a sexual favor.

Anyway, I will now give this matter its rest.

Again, Lex, thank you for the space.
